"The child who has had the opportunity to develop language skills naturally — through immersion, through use — will carry those patterns for life."
— Adapted from Maria Montessori, The Absorbent Mind

Not a class. A way of being.

At Montessori Academy West Adams, language immersion is not scheduled at 10:15 AM. Mandarin and Spanish are the air in the room — present in the lesson a teacher gives while a child works with the golden bead material, in the names of practical life objects on the shelf, in the songs at circle time.

For families in Mid City and Leimert Park, Montessori Academy West Adams is the only nearby option that provides daily Mandarin and Spanish immersion at the preschool level without a separate language school. Both languages are woven into the prepared environment — spoken by teachers throughout the morning work cycle, not added as a 20-minute enrichment block.

Two Living Languages

Every language every day

01
中文
Mandarin

A tonal language that builds exceptional cognitive flexibility and musical pitch processing. Children absorb Mandarin naturally through our tenured, native-speaking teachers.

02
Español
Spanish

The most widely spoken language in Southern California. Children gain an early phonological advantage in a language their community uses daily, inside and outside the classroom.

Why ages 2–6 is the only window that matters

The sensitive period for language — Montessori's term for what neuroscience now calls the critical window — closes around age 7. Before then, the brain acquires language with a naturalness that is biologically unavailable later in life.

Questions about language immersion in West Adams

No. Language immersion at Montessori Academy West Adams is not a separate class or a pull-out session. Mandarin and Spanish are woven into the daily three-hour work cycle — spoken by teachers throughout the morning as children work with Montessori materials. This is how the method works: total immersion in a rich language environment during the sensitive period, not a scheduled lesson.

Mandarin and Spanish. Both are integrated into the daily work cycle at no additional cost — no separate language school required.

The optimal window is ages 2–6 — the sensitive period for language acquisition. Children who begin in our Toddler Program (ages 2–3) and continue through the Primary cycle (ages 3–6) receive three to four years of continuous daily immersion. Children can also begin at age 3 or 4 and still achieve strong bilingual outcomes.

Receptive fluency — understanding and following conversations — develops quickly in daily immersion environments. Productive fluency (speaking comfortably) depends on the individual child and the amount of exposure outside school. Children who complete three years at Montessori Academy typically leave with strong receptive skills in both languages and age-appropriate productive vocabulary.

No. Language immersion is part of the Montessori program — it is included in the standard tuition. There is no language lab fee, no separate enrollment, and no supplemental cost.
