Practical Life Curriculum

Toilet training is a skill, not a gate.

No other local preschool has maintained a no-potty-training-required policy since 1986. At Montessori Academy Culver City, we never have — and never will.

Montessori Academy Culver City does not require potty training as an enrollment prerequisite. Children may enroll in the Toddler Program (ages 2–3) and the Primary Program (ages 3–6) regardless of their current toilet independence status. This policy is not an exception or a special accommodation — it reflects how Maria Montessori understood child development and how we have operated for decades.

In the Montessori prepared environment, toilet independence is a practical life skill — categorized alongside pouring, spooning, dressing, and care of the environment. It is taught through patient, consistent practice in a supportive setting, not through pressure, timelines, or withdrawal of enrollment privileges.

The Montessori bathroom environment — small-scale toilet, step stool, individual hand-washing station — is designed specifically for toddlers. Children observe their peers using it independently. That peer modeling is one of the most powerful accelerators of toilet independence in any setting.

How Montessori supports toilet independence

No Requirement to Enroll

Children can start the Toddler or Primary Program regardless of current toilet status. No timeline, no exceptions, no pressure.

Practical Life Curriculum

Toilet independence is taught as a Montessori skill — alongside pouring, folding, and dressing — in a prepared environment built for this age group.

Peer Modeling Works

Mixed-age classrooms let younger children observe older peers demonstrating independence throughout the day — a uniquely powerful Montessori effect.

Family Communication

Teachers update caregivers on progress without pressure or judgment — part of the transparent parent-school partnership Montessori Academy is known for.

No Deadlines. No Pressure.

Toilet independence arrives on the child's timeline. We do not set enrollment deadlines, probation periods, or ultimatums around it.

Year-Round Consistency

50 weeks of continuous, consistent practical life support — no summer regression, no re-starting, no gaps in the routine.

Potty training questions
Montessori Academy Culver City

No. Montessori Academy Culver City does not require potty training as an enrollment prerequisite. Children may enroll in both the Toddler Program (ages 2–3) and the Primary Program (ages 3–6) regardless of current toilet independence status.

Toilet independence is treated as a practical life skill — part of the Montessori curriculum alongside pouring, dressing, and care of the environment. Teachers support children patiently and consistently, without pressure or timelines, in a bathroom designed specifically for this age group (small-scale toilet, step stool, individual hand-washing station).

Many families report that enrollment in the Toddler Program accelerates toilet independence. The mixed-age classroom means younger children observe older peers using the bathroom independently throughout the day — a powerful form of peer modeling that is unique to Montessori environments. The prepared bathroom and consistent daily routine also support the process.

Accidents are a normal part of toilet training, and our teachers handle them calmly and without judgment. We ask families to provide a full change of clothes in the child's bag each day. Teachers change children as needed and communicate with caregivers at pickup without drawing attention to the accident.

Many licensed childcare centers in California require full toilet independence by age 2 or 3 as a condition of enrollment — often citing staffing ratios or state regulations. Montessori Academy Culver City views this requirement as a barrier to enrollment that does not serve child development. Our staffing model and prepared environment allow us to support children who are in the process of building toilet independence.
